What Makes A Good Headshot?

Blog

If you are an actor or professional that needs professional headshots as part of your work, you may wonder if hiring someone is worth it. In a world of selfies and cell phone cameras, wouldn't it just be easier to take it yourself? The simple truth of the matter is that professional headshots are extremely important, and a poorly taken photograph could affect your future career. Professional headshot photographers know what minute details can set a good headshot apart from a great one, such as the following.

Current Pictures

Professional headshots are a way of showing people what you currently look like. Hence, old photos are worthless. If you get a haircut or major change to the way you look, you will need to get new headshots. If you are getting headshots for a business website, having up-to-date pictures is a little less important. Headshots for acting, on the other hand, should always be as close to your current look as possible. If a casting director sees your headshots, they may have a certain character in mind for you. If your headshot is not current, you may not fit into the role they were envisioning, and lose your shot. Always have current headshots.

Capture Your Personality

A professional photographer will know that a headshot should capture your personality, allowing the viewer to understand at least a bit of who you are—or who you can be in the acting world. Most professional photographers will capture several photos, asking you to portray a range of emotions for potential directors to see. If you are a business professional, even a simple smiling picture can capture your personality. You may want your photos to be more candid, such as in a location you love, though it will depend on the aesthetic your company's website is going for. If a headshot is not portraying your personality and what you can bring to the table, you may want a new headshot.

Styling

As a business professional, the styling in your headshot should be professional and straightforward. However, if you are an actor, you may want to focus on styling that is coordinated to whatever emotion you are attempting to portray in the photo. You need not be styled the same way in each photo. Instead, you can show how transitory you can be.

In conclusion, your headshots should show your potential employer exactly who you are, and (if you are an actor) who you can be. Instead of leaving a future job up to chance, hire a professional photographer to get the perfect headshots for you.

The Ocean and Photography: My Two Loves Combined

Ever since my parents allowed me to snap a few photos on their camera on vacation when I was a young child, I have loved photography. While we lived in the Midwest, I became hooked on taking photographs of the ocean and boats when we visited the Florida coast during one of our trips together. I found that just being near the ocean really made me happy, and after we returned home, I was able to "take the ocean with me" to experience that same feeling by taking photos of it. Being near the ocean is so calming and uplifting, but most people don't live near the coasts and don't get to experience its beauty every day. I now live by the ocean, so I decided to create a blog to share my tips about how you can best photograph the things you love.
